Méthélec Ennezat - Auvergne
The METHELEC anaerobic digestion unit produces biogas (at the rate of 3,400,793 normal cubic meters (Nm3) per year), obtained by treating livestock manure, waste from local agri-food industries, products from used packaging from hypermarkets and supermarkets and contract food services (36,000 metric tons per year). The biogas is then routed to a cogeneration plant that will simultaneously generate electricity (12,400 MWh per year, equivalent to the consumption of almost 4,000 households) and heat (14,000 MWh per year, equivalent to the consumption of almost 1,200 households).
Engineered to meet a number of environmental challenges, the project produces electricity from renewable sources, recovers thermal energy to heat livestock buildings and for use in the dehydration of products intended for the production of animal fodder, treats and recovers livestock manure and agri-food industry waste, reduces natural methane emissions from effluent, and provides a substitute for chemical fertilizers in the form of treated digestate.
The partners have invested €13 million in the project and economic spin-off for local companies amounts to €5 million. Five jobs were created and six livestock buildings erected.
